Check out our recent trip.
Last weekend we had the pleasure of driving to McHenry, Maryland to check out their “Autumn Glory” Festival (in Oakland, MD) and the fall foliage. We also went for a boat ride on Deep Creek Lake.
Autumn Glory Festival, Oakland
The Autumn Glory festival is annually held in Oakland, MD and includes plenty of activities. Check out their full calendar of events here. There’s a parade, craft festival, pumpkin chucking, and more! This isn’t a large festival, so don’t expect a huge crowd. Family friendly, be sure to take advantage of all the festival has to offer.
There is a train that passes near downtown Oakland, and we were lucky enough to have one come by while we were there. 80 cars of coal passed under this bridge. Unfortunately, I had to head inside due to the noise.
We stayed on the lake for this visit. There are plenty of vacation rentals available, as this time of year isn’t the peak-season. Expect rentals to be MUCH cheaper, about $1,000 USD less than peak season prices. If you’ve never been and you love the fall, this might be the best time of year for you to check it out.
A boat ride. Nice and gentle for my brain!

Above, a picturesque dock.
In the winter the lake freezes over, turning into a paradise for winter activity lovers. There is a ski resort nearby as well, allowing other opportunities for lodging and activities.
